The Goddess for April - Sarasvati

Sarasvati

The Maiden of the Hindu Triple Goddesses, Sarasvati, is inspiration, sacred words, and music. With her consort Brahma, she created the world in a honeymoon lasting, some say, 80,000 years. Another tale is that Brahma has 4 faces so that as she seductively danced around him, she never left his sight, since he had a head facing in each direction.

Deep spiritual understanding comes through her. She rides the white swan, called in Sanskrit, “paramahansa”. This is the name taken by Paramahansa Yogananda, the man who brought yogic tradition to America, in the middle of the 20th century.

I would see her as a Goddess of Seduction, too. Our culture seems to say that deep spirituality and sexual enticements are not compatible. But here is a Goddess whose beauty and lovemaking created the world.

She was originally a river goddess, thus with Sarasvati, one can flow with inspiration, with life itself. There is something most Divine about Flow. In chakra work, I would assign her to the 7th chakra.
